Diabetes Advice

If you have diabetes, or are at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, there are a range of NHS services available to help you manage your health and reduce the risk of complications.

Support from Your GP Practice

  • Blood pressure

  • Cholesterol

  • Kidney function

  • Weight and BMI

  • Feet

  • Medicines and treatment

  • Lifestyle and general wellbeing

Please attend your diabetes reviews and any blood tests or other appointments you are invited to.

NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme

If you are at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, you may be eligible for the Healthier You NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme.

The programme provides personalised support with:

  • Healthy eating

  • Weight management

  • Increasing physical activity

  • Making sustainable lifestyle changes

The programme is available through face-to-face and digital options. Speak to your GP practice to find out whether you are eligible for a referral.

Diabetic Eye Screening

Diabetes can affect the blood vessels at the back of your eyes and may lead to diabetic retinopathy.

If you have diabetes and are aged 12 or over, you will usually be invited for NHS diabetic eye screening every 1 or 2 years, depending on your previous screening results.

Diabetic eye screening is different from a normal eye test, so it is important to continue attending regular eye tests with your optician as well.

Diabetes Education and Support

The NHS provides structured education and self-management support for people with diabetes. These programmes can help you understand your condition and develop the knowledge and skills needed to manage it confidently.

Your GP practice or diabetes team can advise you about suitable diabetes education services available to you.

Type 1 Diabetes Support

People with type 1 diabetes are usually supported by a specialist diabetes team alongside their GP care.

The NHS provides information about managing type 1 diabetes, treatment, blood glucose monitoring and where to find additional support.
